How to get your Dutch VAT number + officially set up as a ZZP’er

If you’re just starting out as a freelancer in the Netherlands, one of your first steps is registering with the KvK – the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. This is how you officially set up your business, get your KvK number, and apply for a VAT number (also known as your BTW-ID).

Whether you’re on a DAFT visa, just moved to the Netherlands, or switching from employment to freelance work, this guide explains what you need to know.

What is an eenmanszaak?

An eenmanszaak is a sole proprietorship. It’s the most common legal structure for freelancers and ZZP’ers in the Netherlands.

It’s simple to set up, but keep in mind: you’re personally liable for your business. That means if something goes wrong financially, you’re responsible for the debts, even with your personal savings or belongings.

You can only have one eenmanszaak, but it can have multiple trade names and services under it.

Who needs to register?

You need to register with the KvK if:

  • You are starting a new business in the Netherlands

  • You already run a sole proprietorship abroad and want to operate in the Netherlands

  • You are a freelancer, consultant, or small business owner working for yourself

Note: “freelancer” and “ZZP’er” are not legal forms – they’re just terms used for self-employed people. Most freelancers register as an eenmanszaak.

What you need before registering

To register, you’ll need a few things ready:

  • A DigiD (Dutch digital ID – you’ll need this to pre-register online)

  • Your BSN number (citizen service number)

  • A Dutch address for your business (can be your home address)

  • Your business name

  • A short description of your work

  • Your contact details

How to register

  1. Pre-register online
    Go to the KvK website and start the registration for an eenmanszaak. You’ll fill in your details and then book a physical appointment.

  2. Go to your KvK appointment
    Bring your valid ID or passport. At the appointment, a KvK staff member will check your details and finalise your registration.

  3. Pay the one-time registration fee
    From 1 January 2025, the fee is €82.25. You can pay this by card. This fee is tax-deductible.

What happens next?

After your appointment:

  • You’ll receive your KvK number right away

  • Your details are automatically sent to the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax office)

  • If they consider you an entrepreneur for VAT, they’ll send your VAT ID (BTW-ID) and your VAT number (OB number) by post within 1–2 weeks

Your VAT ID goes on your invoices. Your OB number is used to log in and submit VAT returns.

Other things to know

  • You are legally required to keep proper records. This includes invoices, bank statements and receipts. Most freelancers use software like QuickBooks for this.

  • The KvK doesn’t handle your taxes. You’ll deal with the Belastingdienst for VAT and income tax after registration.

  • If you qualify, you might be eligible for small business tax benefits like the zelfstandigenaftrek.
